美少年の愛 ／ Bishonen

The 1990s saw Chinese film take something of a lead in the field with several well-received films from major directors with primary or secondary gay story lines - "Farewell My Concubine" (Chen Kaige), "Hold You Tight" (Stanley Kwan) and "Happy Together" (Wong Kar Wai) are all from the same era as "Bishonen". "Bishonen" was one I hadn't seen.
Its dreamy, often neon-hued and saturated photography follows the twists and turns of a couple of professional escorts (the beautiful boys of the title) through both professional encounters and real, careless or callous love. In some ways, while it doesn't claim to achieve much beyond its boundaries of the vagaries of such loves and encounters, director and writer Yonfan's apparent aim towards the end of condensing the meaning of loving and being loved is perhaps just a little too lofty an ambition for its structure.
Nevertheless, if the beautiful boys of the title seem a little too beautiful (and certain middle-aged hangers-on seem a little too camp and predatory) the film's title doesn't suggest it intended to be otherwise. There's a somewhat awkward sense to some of the love or sexual scenes, but perhaps we should remember that full-fledged gay romances and sexual encounters were - and often still are - unusual in mainstream cinema. And despite that occasional awkwardness, the film manages - I'd imagine - to be as appealing to the romantic in anyone, straight or gay.
While the story is of loves and losses, Hong Kong is a secondary character, with much filmed on the streets, which puts the film in a place and culture that's specific (and adds to a filmic interest). As do the jokey references to a character looking like actor Andy Lau, and another's dealings with "Leslie's agent", a reference to (openly gay) Hong Kong actor Leslie Chung. Looking back, though, it's a bittersweet reference since between then and now the talented Leslie Chung (who co-incidentally was in both "Farewell my Concubine" and "Happy Together" and had worked on another of Stanley Kwan's films) has, of course, unfortunately committed suicide.
So for me, it's an easily consumed and curious film, that nevertheless doesn't fly as high as it could.
Finally, a big thank you to Ruka-san, who took the time herself to translate the Japanese subtitles for this, one of her favourite films, in to English so I could watch the movie easily. Anyone need subtitles - I have a recommendation for someone to work on them!

先ず、約１０年前の映画で映像はとっても好みでした。ああいうお遊び的な美しい映像、私は大好きです。
ストーリーはと言えば、何とも切ないです。
普段は堂々とかっこよくていさぎよく見えている男子たちですが、同性愛者であること、とりわけ売春行為をしていることに対する負い目を抱えていて、そんな負い目が逆に人や自分を傷つけてしまう。
SAMとJET、友達同士であればとても爽やか、世間的にも微笑ましいほどの仲の良さです。それが愛情や欲望に発展することで壮絶なタブーに取って替わるわけで、そのギャップの描き方は非常にリアルで胸に迫りました。だけど、他人の愛情や愛の形って他人が介入して意見を述べたり評価するべきものでもないのに、世間やモラルに殺されてしまう男の子たちはまだまだ多いのでしょうね・・・。
しかも男の子達可愛いし、よけいに繊細で愛おしく感じてしまいました。
だけど、ストーリーの枠組みは価値観に関わる悲劇ではあるのに、ベースは普通にスタンダードな恋愛ですね。まるで初恋のような、純粋な心の機微がずっと綴られていく感じ。誰でも愛したいし、愛されたい。その感情って当たり前みたいにあるようで、ほんとはそこにある純粋さは失いがちなものだし、大切なものだよなって、改めて強く見せつけられた感じでした。
ラブシーンも、「ブエノスアイレス」や「二十歳の微熱」などは露骨すぎて少し疲れたけど、この映画では特別なもの（お尻など）を見せなくても十分にセクシーでした。
ちょっとお宝映像的なものを観たようなお得感が余韻として残りました。
来月も皆さん、楽しくやりましょうねーー☆

あまりにも美だったのか、美少年たちの若い男娼故の様、印象に残りました。知らない世界を見た感覚と、彼らの恋というか、彼らの娼婦的な相手に対する視線の投げ方もとても残りました。ちょっと僕にとっては、後退してしまいました。でも知らない世界が故か、リアルに感じたような気がします。また、そこに彼らの儚いというか、その時を、今を生きるだけ、先のことは考えていない若さ、その息づかいが見えていたような気もします。まだまだ青いですが、少し社会を知っている自分にとっては、あの若い勢いを僕も学生の頃など会ったのかなと思い出しました。また、復活させたいと最近思うこのごろです。
この上映会の一週間後、公開中の、大ファンのショーン・ペン主演『ミルク』を見に行きました。何故か偶然にも流れを汲んだような感じは後で気づいたのですが…、大絶賛してしまいました。一人の人間として、奮い立たせてくれような映画です。また、僕にとって、日々の生活、出会ったことのある人々などと重なり、様々なシーンが、抵抗なく頷ける感覚を覚えたからだと思います。
様々環境、世代、人々いろんな感覚をある意味にリアルに覚えた一時でした。
映画ってやっぱりいいですね
